Welcome!

Andrew Pareles (@Kubester)

Think about the most fun you've ever had in a video game. We doubt you're thinking of thinking of a mobile game, or a single player game, even though those can be fun. You're probably thinking of a game you played online with friends!

Fun comes from multiplayer!

I put together a tier list of items we think are good, bad, and neutral in a multiplayer game. Kube.new is early, but we keep these in mind after every update.

Bad

  1. Pay-to-win. If you can buy an item to win every round, that's bad.

  2. Play-to-win. If a game is built around playing N hours to unlock something, that's usually a bad sign.

  3. Bots. The fun of multiplayer comes entirely from knowing you're playing with other humans.

Neutral

  1. Types of novelty that are temporarily entertaining, but not truly fun. Amazing graphics, cutscenes, novel visual effects, sounds, humor. You definitely want these in a good game, and they add a lot. However, they do not create fun on their own, and can keep you playing a game simply out of novelty, not real fun.

The ultimate test of whether a game was fun is how it ages. Fall Guys and Mario Kart both have great graphics, but one was hype, and one is real fun.

Good

  1. The #1 source of fun is player-to-player interaction. If you can jump on, bump into, or shoot your friends, the game is more fun. This is the most important feature of any truly fun game, and it's what we focus on in our engine.

  2. Indirect player-player interaction. Leaderboards, trading, etc. You can get very fun dynamics from this.

  3. High skill caps. Depth. Emergent behavior. These all make the game worth playing often.

  4. Free will. It's annoying if you drop an item for your friend but they're not able to pick it up, or if you try to jokingly damage them but you're not allowed. If a player has free will, a game should limit them minimally.

Kube.new

On Kube.new, you're free to build any game - "good" or "bad". But we promise to do our best supporting games with the good features above, without needing to build the bad ones.

We think the world is ready to bring back creative, awesome, novel, and truly fun multiplayer games.
